New Hot Rod Cabs?

Check this out! What a paint job! Are these cabs for the drivers? No...It seems Gulf Coast Transportation inc. who owns United Cab of Tampa was using this car for an owners convention they had in Tampa a few weeks ago.

Nice of those owners to use mini-bus transport and not once using the cabs in this town. I guess they know the meters are to damn expensive.

Anyway, after spending thousands on this detail and paint job they are going to convert it back to a normal cab. I guess they need to keep the lease money rolling in.

It is bad out here folks for us cab drivers. I am starving and the bills are piling up.

COLTS VS GIANTS: THE GREATEST GAME EVER

ESPN is airing a documentary on the 1958 New York Giants-Baltimore Colts NFL championship game that has been called the greatest game ever played. Not coincidentally, that's the name of the ESPN program that will be broadcast at 9 p.m. ET on Saturday.

The game was played 50 years ago, on Dec. 28, 1958, at Yankee Stadium. It was the first, and only, NFL championship game to go into overtime. Colts quarterback Johnny Unitas led a score-tying field-goal drive at the end of regulation to make the score 17-17. Unitas then threw often to Raymond Berry while moving the Colts 80 yards. Alan Ameche scored the game-winning touchdown on a one-yard run.

What the NBC network did not know at the time, was what they had on their hands. The game aired at 4 PM ET and went on into the Sunday night. Since it was the first (and only) NFL title game that has gone overtime, it went way into the night. People on Sunday evening are usually at home. NBC discovered when the rating came in that virtually every home in America with a tv had the game on! They could hear the cash registers ringing. This game was the beginning of one of the most successful sports leagues in history driven by beer advertising.

Is Cesar Padilla Corrupt?

I came across this info recently. It seems one of the Hillsborough county Commissioners Kevin White was attempting to bribe Hillsborough County Transportation Interim Commissioner Cesar Padilla for a political payoff.

White has been pushing the TPC to double Padilla's salary to $100,000. Why? White had a campaign advisor named Victor DiMaio who Padilla subsequently hired as a lobbyist for $5,000 a month. Some things never change.

Does Padilla know how little money the taxi drivers are making at this time because of the climate created by his agency. What makes him worth this much money paid for by fines to cab drivers for not wearing collared shirts and having dirty cabs. This agency needs reform...not more graft. At the last Public Transportation Commission meeting, board chairman Kevin White suggested hiring a lobbyist to handle legislative matters.
Now, a little more than two weeks later, the agency has a lobbyist: Victor DiMaio, who was a consultant on White's winning campaign for the Hillsborough County Commission last year.
White said he had nothing to do with hiring DiMaio.
He simply told Cesar Padilla, interim executive director of the PTC, to find someone familiar with the commission, which licenses taxis, limousines and tow trucks.
Padilla said he settled on DiMaio.
"He's been affiliated with the industry for a number of years," Padilla said. "He knows our laws and our rules. It was a short period of time. He fit the profile."
He said White, who last month pushed for the PTC to more than double Padilla's salary to $100,000 when he made the leap from chief inspector to interim executive director, never mentioned DiMaio to him.

Gas Needs To Go Down Now!

Hurricane Ike caused little damage to the Gulf Coast, which was a stroke of good luck. My understanding is that with a world-wide drop in demand, wholesale oil prices are at a seven month low. The prices have dropped below $98 a barrel. We should now be paying about a dollar less a gallon, but the price has not really moved much. This photo was taken in August when prices where at their highest. That is what I paid this morning...Now movement...Why?

Obama And Spanish For America

One of the problems with electing a pointy headed intellectual as President is they have no real world experience. Barrack Obama thinks forcing Spanish on children and adults is a good thing. This is America Mr Obama, I can learn any damn language I want sir. I don't need your help on that matter. I am a cab driver in Tampa Florida and WE are required to speak ENGLISH. We have drivers from all over the world and if they pick up customers that speak their language, I am sure they talk their tongue. However, English is mandated not any other language. There are many reasons for that such as maintaining continuity and a stable Culture. I think you have been hanging out with your buddy El Presidente Chavez from Venezuela the socialist who has endorsed you for President. Maybe we should learn Ebonics or something.

Raman Noodles And Broke Taxi Drivers

I saw this sign on the windshiel of a Checker cab. I could not agree more. The Cab business in Tampa is bad...real bad. In the 12 years that I have been driving, it has never been like this. I worked 12 hours today and had about 10 rides - on a Monday morning! This is unheard of. I know the economy is down, but I am the one paying the 4 bucks a gallon to haul you around. Why so few riders? It is getting VERY scary.

I am having noodles every night for dinner and tonight is no exception. I have, however, managed to obtain 8 oz of ground beef so I can at least have some meat with my spaghetti...The Raman noddles where starting to get a little old.

Many of the drivers are having a hard time. I saw Sampson on 31 and then he was on 23...He used to only work stand 21 but now says there are "Too many 21 hounds" oh how the worm turns..

Hang in there until Obama is elected I guess. He is the Messiah, right?

Darra Torres

Dara Grace Torres (born in 1967) is the first American swimmer to compete in 5 Olympic Games!: 1984, 1988, 1992, 2000, 2008. She qualified Friday night by winning the gold at Nationals and last night set an American Record in the Womens 50 Freestyle. During her career Dara has won 9 Olympic medals including 4 golds. In Sydney 2000 she won 5 medals being the eldest team member (in 2000 Dara was 33 years old). She began a comeback 2 years ago after having a baby (I am not the father) she will become the oldest female Olympic athlete at the age of 41.

Having finished her swimming career, Dara begun has career on television as a sport speaker. At the moment she is working with such companies as NBC, ESPN, TNT, OLN and Fox News Channel. Dara is the host of the gulf show “The Clubhouse” on the Resort Sports Network. Many of you will remember her more for the info commercial with Tae Bo martial arts expert Billy Blank...She was the blonde spokesperson for the commercial.

Being a beautiful women, Dara Torres has always been the object of adoration. Many famous photographers took the pictures of hers, and quite a number of top men’s magazines placed the images of Dara on cover.

Take a close look at this photo. Does this look like a women on Performance Inhancement drugs or HGH? Does not look that way.

Torres is Jewish on her father's side. She converted to Judaism before marrying her second husband, Israeli surgeon Itzhak Shasha, and in 2005 was inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.

Gaybor In Ybor Tampa

Ybor City in Tampa is becoming gay. That may not be all bad. For many years the stupid shits that owned the night clubs in Ybor catered to the underage crowds that had no money to spend and where only looking for trouble. They found it. Hardly a weekend went by without someone being killed in Ybor. Ridiculous.

The gays are well behaved, have more money to spend, and travel to Tampa as everything from 7Th ave and 17st West is becoming an exclusive gay Zone, hence the name "Gaybor." This is a photo of "G Club" or "G Bar" perhaps the most popular gay night club in Tampa at this moment.

I have also noticed more art springing up in the area. There where at least two art shows that I found on the same block today. This is certainly what we have needed.

Dara Torres Olympic Swimmer at 41 Years Old

Dara Torres was a medal winner in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games at the age of 17in Swimming. She became a model and was, perhaps, most famous for the Tia Boa Martial arts commercials. In 2000 she made a comeback and won three Bronze medals at Sydney Australia. Last night I watched her qualify for the finals in the woman's 100 meter freestyle with a personal best at the age of 41. Many suspect drugs and HGH. I don't. I have been around Masters swimming for many years and have seen middle age people set personal best because they are on consistent training programs that they never where on in their early years. I say go Dara Torres.

Welcome To Cypress Point Park

There is a nice little beach park on the extreme west end of Cypress Boulevard in Tampa. There is actually a beach with sand dunes. Those things you don't often see in Florida.

I was dropping off a fare at the office center near Reno and Cypress, and pulled in here to take a little nap. It was very quit and peaceful and I really don't know if I had ever been here before.

After a little nap, I even took a walk on the beach. I did notice some guys out fishing. The beach is not in the best of shape, but there is an awesome view of Tampa Bay. Bring a towel or blanket for the beach does have sea weed on it. The park is on the direct flight line to Tampa International Airport and they will fly overhead by only a few hundred feet.

Tampa man Charged With Stealing Taxi

A Tampa man has been charged with stealing a taxi cab and crashing it.
Police say the taxi driver was handling a customer's luggage early Saturday morning when Olyn Newsome pushed the driver aside and got in. He then fled.
Officers spotted the car that night and chased Newsom until he crashed into a yard.
Newsome was charged with carjacking, aggravated fleeing to elude and resisting arrest without violence.

We just had another cab stolen this morning, it was United Cab #378. Have you seen it? Good Lord gangsters....a cab is marked with a cab and phone number. You really should find other targets.

Gypsy Cabs Ruining This Business In Tampa

My taxi blogger friend in San Francisco believes that unlicensed gypsy cabs are a real threat to his business and the general public. He is right.
In San Francisco they have a real problem with former cab drivers driving unlicensed cabs with no medallion. They are usually guys that have been fired from all the real cab companies and still want to drive cab. They are basically losers, and the lowest form of life on Earth. All of the bad cab stories you have ever heard were probably from what the "gypsy cab" did to them, and this is reflected onto all "real" cab drivers. The tragedy is that in Tampa, John Cox, the Commissioner of the Hillsborough County Public Transportation Commission is allowing "gypsy" type cabs to flourish.
What he has done is allow more permits to drive cab than the market can bear. He knows that there are enough losers who will scarf up those permits because they are incapable of doing anything else for living other than being a janitor, landscaper, construction worker, or the "Clorox" guy at a local XXX rated porn shop. I guess they figure hacking is better than cleaning up after some perv for $6.75 an hour, so they drive cab. They have been fired from both Yellow and United but they just continue to exist and want to drive like the scumbag in the photo above who has no medallion or is he licensed in the correct county or any county.
Since these guys do not serve the general public, the hang out at the downtown hotels, cruise ship and late night bars. They are what is wrong with the business. It is John Cox that has allowed this to continue. It seems Cox is only interested in weather a cab needs a car wash or not. I don't mean to be blunt, but I am one of the last white, English speaking cab drivers left in the profession.

More Cabs And Vans Killing This Business

On the back lot at United Cab you can see the overflow of the Bay Shuttle vans that take people to Tampa International Airport and also pick up at the Airport to points unknown. That is a direct threat to our business. Don't get me wrong, I believe in free market capitalism but Bay Shuttle is owned by United Cab. What do they care?

As long as the cab drivers pay the lease every week, day or shift($25,000 a year) they are doing just fine. The only thing that happens is I have to work harder and longer to make the same amount of money that I have been used to. Even these efforts no a days don't really help. I know what you are thinking, get another job. But I sort of feel like the bank robber character played by Robert Dinero in the movie HEAT. He said "I have been doing this for so long, I don't know if I could do anything else." After 12 years it becomes a part of you. It is your daily routine. I give order and stability to your life. Like any addict, it would be hard to just walk away.

In Tampa just today I saw AFFORDABLE TAXI, ADDIS TAXI, AMERICAB, ABC TAXI, A-1 CAB, OLDSMAR TAXI, NORTHWEST ZONE TAXI. Does Tampa really need all of these taxi companies. They must all be a bunch of paupers. There is not enough business out there to support what is going on. I guess these idiots are willing to work 16 hours a day 7 days a week. Just today in the business office I saw to immigrants filling out the forms to become new drivers. One of the guys said he used to drive in Boston where you have to own the medallion...it cost $750,000! That sounds insane. You cannot earn that driving a cab. Do I sound burned out?

Tampa International Airport

This was the view today form the new holding area at Tampa International Airport. What the authority has done is move us over to the quad areas. They believed that the cabs were the cause of the traffic tie ups in the terminal. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is because in Tampa Florida we now do 5 times the volume of traffic since the airport was built in the early 1970's. I guess they needed someone to blame all of this on.

Anyway, I did not have to wait long today and caught about 4 rides in 2 hours. They did not go far, but tipped well and it was well worth my effort. With things getting cold up north I need to incorporate the airport more into my daily activities. I did take this guy about my age who had meet this chick on the internet and they were like video caming for the last year and he was now in town to get laid I guess. I wonder why he went to a high end hotel. Love modern style.

Taxi Taxi Public Acess TV

I found this on You Tube. It seems there is a Public access TV show called TAXI TAXI and one of the stars is Yellow cab driver Nana. In this video he tells why he is a cab driver because the only job he can get in America is dishwasher and driving a taxi gives him a sense of accomplishment.
